Carceri D'Invenzione (XVIB)
Monumental Inscriptions Beyond a Confusion of Broken Beams
Broken wooden beams bearing iron spikes are piled in confusion, the
wreckage of a long disused machine. A tall tombstone bears the carved
heads of two ancient emperors, and the inscription "IMPIETATI ET MALIS
ARTIBVS". On a nearby pillar is carved: "AD TERROREM INCRESCEN
AVDACIAE". On another: "INFAMI SCEI VSVRI INFELICI SYSPE". Below that
inscription is a relief carving of a procession of prisoners led in chains.
The pillar is circular, the procession endless.
Turning, you see a large stone cistern. It is empty.
In a corner of the cistern lies a discarded black rubber ball.
