Carceri D'Invenzione (IV)
View Through an Arch Toward a Bridge with a Sculptured Frieze; Below, a Colonnade Reminiscent of St. Peter's Square in Old Rome
Through the massive archway you see a tall bridge whose sculptures
depict a triumphal procession. Where are these proud emperors, stern
generals, and vain noblemen now? Dust, and long forgotten. In the middle
distance, through the arches of the bridge, you see a wide road leading eastwards, lined with stone columns. It leads to a smaller, mossy bridge surmounted by a picturesquely crumbling tower. Beyond lies a sunlit summer
landscape dotted with ancient stone ruins: temples, triumphal arches, and
civic buildings. Mature trees thrust through fallen columns, while rustic
peasants tend their flocks in the shade, oblivious to the grandeur of what
was.
